‘He’s desperate’: US citizens react as Joe Biden lauds economic success on TV show

American citizens on Thursday, July 10, reacted to President Joe Biden praising the economic conditions in the US during his interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday. During the interview, Biden praised the success of the US economy while calling inflation “the bane of our existence.”

“We have the fastest-growing economy in the world… the world… the world. We have 8.6 million new jobs since I got into office. The unemployment rate is down to 3.6 per cent. We reduced the deficit by $320 billion last year. We’ll reduce it by $1.6 trillion,” said Joe Biden during the interview with Kimmel.

Since then, citizens have been reacting in a mixed manner. Some said they were unsure about the economy’s success, but felt the impact of rising prices on a daily basis. According to the Department of Labor, inflation has risen to a 40-year record high in 2022.

Tom of New Jersey told Fox News, “I think inflation is really going to hurt the economy going forward. It doesn’t seem to be stopping, and oil and gas, I don’t see that mitigating, so it’s going to hurt.”

But Luis, who is also from New Jersey, opined that growth in the US is fast. “I do believe we grow very fast over here in the US, so I would agree somewhat with him.”

US President Joe Biden appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” on Wednesday. This marks his first network interview in 118 days. During the interview, Biden also took a swipe at former President Trump.

“I’m not sure how great the economy is going,” said Hemish, a resident of Brooklyn, New York. “But I do know inflation is very high and everybody is frustrated.”

“Times are really tough right now with the gas prices going up, and every item when I go food shopping is 20% more post-Covid,” said Kathy, a New Jersey resident.

Further, the US President teased potential executive orders regarding abortion and said the White House has had major successes that it hasn’t communicated well.

Tom, however, said he couldn’t name a major success Biden had scored. “Nor can Joe,” Tom told Fox News. “He goes on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!’—like c’mon, he’s the president of the United States. He’s desperate.”
