Elon Musk is the world’s richest man. But the billionaire is also a lot of other things: He’s the CEO of Tesla, the boss of SpaceX and Boring Company, cryptocurrency enthusiast, meme-maker, a Covidiot and a Twitter troll. The billionaire has often received criticism for his radical (and sometimes rash) worldview. Musk also appears to have two personas: A cool zaddy persona online, and a boomer grandpa persona offline. Online, Musk talks about taking humanity to the moon. Offline, Musk wants his employees at Tesla to work longer hours.
Musk recently announced he is thinking about introducing a policy change in his companies to help employees have more than one child. He added that the Musk Foundation also “plans to donate directly to families.” Currently, the exact details of the childcare benefits remain unclear. Musk says that details will be announced next month.
Would the benefits include months of paid leave to raise the children, for both parents? Knowing Tesla’s track record of mistreating employees (and getting sued), it does sound unlikely.
But between his pseudo-philosophical tweets and criticizing Twitter (on Twitter), along with some of his statements on the public record, we’ve figured out what Musk’s ideal employee would look like.
In early June, Musk announced employees were required to spend a minimum of 40 hours in the office per week. He said, “to be super clear,” this can’t be “some remote pseudo office” but rather where their actual colleagues are located. “If you don’t show up,” he demanded, “we will assume you have resigned.”
In mid-June, at least five employees were fired by the private rocket company SpaceX after drafting and circulating an open letter criticizing founder Elon Musk and calling on executives at the startup to make the company’s work culture more inclusive.
In end June, a Tesla investor filed a suit against CEO Elon Musk on Thursday over claims the company failed to respond to harassment and discrimination complaints. The suit alleged that Tesla has “created a toxic workplace grounded in racist and sexist abuse and discrimination” against its employees in a suit filed in federal court in the Western District of Texas.
Musk may be a genius, but he may not be the boss you want. Perhaps Beyonce’s latest song, ‘Break my soul’ is the anthem of the current great resignation instead.
