Video: Floodwaters in Libya wipe out entire neighbourhoods in Derna

Libya has been hit by catastrophic floods caused by the Mediterranean storm, Daniel. The storm led to the collapse of two dams near the coastal city of Derna, causing widespread destruction and loss of life.

As of September 13, over 5,200 people have been confirmed dead, with at least 10,000 still missing. The floods have wiped out nearly a quarter of Derna, a city home to around 100,000 people.

Entire neighborhoods were swept away, and tall buildings collapsed, trapping residents under rubble. The situation is further complicated by the country’s political instability, making relief efforts challenging. However, international aid organizations, including Islamic Relief Worldwide and the International Rescue Committee, are working tirelessly to provide assistance.

The EU has also pledged humanitarian funding of over €89 million.
