US will not abandon Taiwan, says Nancy Pelosi


US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, speaking at Taiwan’s presidential office, told Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen that she came to Taiwan to make unequivocally clear that the US “will not abandon Taiwan.” Pelosi’s statement came amid China’s criticism of her visit.

Nancy Pelosi, who is on her Taiwan visit, met President Tsai Ing-wen on Wednesday, August 3, at the presidential office.

Pelosi also said now more than ever, America’s solidarity with Taiwan is “crucial” and that’s the message she is delivering today.

Praising the country’s democracy, Pelosi said, “Taiwan is a flourishing democracy. It has proven to the world that hope, courage and determination can build a peaceful and prosperous future despite the challenges it faces”.

“Today, the world faces a choice between democracy and autocracy. America’s determination to preserve democracy here in Taiwan and in the world remains iron-clad”, said Pelosi during a meeting with President Tsai.

She also lauded Taiwan for its management of the Covid pandemic and said, “You are a model to the world”.

Pelosi mentioned the three pillars of her travel, “global security, economics and governance”.

During her speech, Pelosi said that she wants to increase parliamentary exchanges between the US and Taiwan. She called Taiwan “one of the freest societies in the world”. She also said the US chip bill would offer a good opportunity for US-Taiwan cooperation in the chip industry.

Nancy Pelosi receives Taiwan’s highest civilian honor

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi received Taiwan’s highest civilian honor, the Order of Propitious Clouds with Special Grand Cordon on Wednesday, August 3.

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen bestowed the honor on Pelosi, ahead of remarks delivered to reporters and officials in the presidential office in Taipei.

Tsai draped a blue sash around Pelosi, before pinning the award on her suit jacket. The two bowed to each other, standing on a stage, before turning back to the crowd.
